Write On! Call for Papers: American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy, and the Law

Source: International Law Grrl

December 16, 2020

American University’s Journal of Gender, Social Policy and the Law is now accepting article submissions for their upcoming issue.

The latest Washington and Lee Law Review rankings list the American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law as one of the top-cited legal periodicals in the U.S. and selected non-U.S. regions in the subject area of Social Policy, Gender, Sexuality and the Law.

Those interested can submit their article for consideration by email to gl-articles@wcl.american.edu. Please note the Journal does not accept articles written by law students. The Journal is looking for articles that present new arguments or perspectives about a timely legal issue primarily in U.S. laws. We prefer 15,000 words more or less, including at least 150 footnotes. Generally, the Journal evaluates articles depending on many factors such as strength of the argument, novelty, complexity, policy considerations, and the overall topic(s) falls within the Journal’s subject area.

Write On! Practising Reflexivity in International Law

Source: International Law Grrls

August 03, 2020

This installment of Write On!, our periodic compilation of calls for papers, includes calls to submit papers to the Law Department of the European University Institute for a two-day Doctoral Forum on International Law as follows:

The Law Department of the European University Institute is hosting Practising Reflexivity in International Law, to be held November 23-24, 2020 at the Department of Law, Villa Salviati, in Florence, Italy with the help of the European Society of International Law. The theme is addressing the challenges international lawyers face today, including the rise of populism, growing economic inequality, climate change, and unraveling global cooperation. In addressing these challenges, the situation of international lawyers–e.g., their race, gender, or position in the field–and its influence on how they think and address these challenges has been seldom considered overtly. Building on this reflexive attitude, long productively discussed in the social sciences, this Forum invites contributors to explore practicing reflexivity in their own work and in the field of international law.

The practice of reflexivity takes the international lawyer as an object of research, examining their situation and how it influences what they do or think, and it can also extend to an examination of the field itself and the scholarly endeavour. In particular, this Forum seeks to investigate how the practice of reflexivity could uncover disciplinary routines and create possibilities for new or alternative interventions in response to the field’s most pressing challenges. Abstracts of around 500 words are due by September 13, 2020 to DFIL@eui.eu. For more information, please click here.

February 18, 2019

Women in International Security (WIIS)-Canada is proud to invite applications from graduate students to participate in its 12th annual Workshop, to be held at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs from June 19-21, 2019. WIIS-Canada is a national network dedicated to advancing the position of women students, scholars, and practitioners in the field of international affairs, defence, and security. Up to 35 graduate students will be selected to present their research and take part in skill-building, networking, and mentorship exercises with subject-matter experts from academia, government, military, and the non-profit and private sectors.

This year’s theme, “Security and Power in a Tumultuous World Order” offers participants a platform to survey and analyze the dramatic changes in international security and cooperation since the 2016 United States’ general election. In addressing these challenges, the workshop seeks to diversify the voices in defence and security, encouraging dialogue between traditional and critical approaches, as well as theory and practice.

This year, we seek two types of presentation from graduate students interested in international security, broadly defined. First, we invite five-minute thesis proposals from junior graduate students to receive feedback on early-stage projects. Second, we invite senior graduate students to propose ten-minute presentation on current research.

  • Tensions between national and international security
  • Canada-US relations
  • Shifts and transformations in the international system
  • New actors in international relations and security
  • Indigenous global politics
  • Diplomacy and international cooperation
  • Feminist methods and methodologies in International Relations

Please send questions and abstracts of a maximum of 250 words, together with a short bio of 150 words, to workshop@wiiscanada.org by Friday March 22, 2019. While we do not expect complete papers to be submitted prior to the workshop, selected participants must submit a detailed outline of their presentation to the organizers by June 1st, 2019.
